Performing pooja (worship) to Lord Shiva is a sacred act filled with devotion and simplicity. Here is a traditional way to perform Shiva Pooja at home:
Preparation:
1.
Clean yourself and the place: Take a bath and wear clean clothes. Clean the area where the pooja will be performed.
2.
Set up the altar: Place a Shiva Lingam, a photo or an idol of Lord Shiva on a clean platform or altar.
3.
Gather pooja items: Water, milk, curd, honey, ghee, sugar (for Panchamrit), bilva (bael) leaves, flowers (especially white), sandalwood paste, incense sticks, lamp (diya), fruits, and naivedya (offering).
Pooja Steps:
1.
Invoke Lord Shiva: Light the lamp and incense sticks. Sit facing east or north. Meditate on Lord Shiva and invite His presence with prayers.
2.
Abhishekam (ritual bathing):
- Offer plain water to the Shiva Lingam while chanting “Om Namah Shivaya”.
- Perform abhishekam with Panchamrit (mixture of milk, curd, honey, ghee, sugar), then again wash with water.
- Offer rose water or coconut water if available.
3.
Offer Bilva Leaves: Place bilva leaves (preferably three-leaved) on the Lingam as they are very dear to Shiva.
4.
Apply Sandalwood Paste: Gently apply sandalwood paste to the Lingam or idol.
5.
Offer Flowers: Place flowers, especially white flowers, at the base of the Lingam or in front of the idol.
6.
Light Incense and Lamp: Wave incense sticks and the lamp in a circular motion as an offering.
7.
Chant Mantras: Recite Shiva mantras such as:
- “Om Namah Shivaya”
- Shiva Ashtakshara or Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra.
8.
Offer Fruits and Naivedya: Place fruits and any food prepared as an offering to Lord Shiva.
9.
Aarti: Sing or recite Shiva Aarti, waving the lamp.
10.
Prayers: Offer your prayers, ask for blessings, and meditate for a few moments.
After Pooja:
- Distribute the prasad (offered food) among family members.
- Maintain silence or recite Shiva’s name for a few minutes.
Important Notes:
- Worship with a pure heart and devotion, as Lord Shiva values simplicity and sincerity.
- Bilva leaves should not be torn or broken and should be offered facing the smooth side downward.
- Avoid offering turmeric and ketaki flowers, as they are not traditionally offered to Shiva.
May Lord Shiva bless you with peace and wisdom! Om Namah Shivaya.
