The desire to know who is greater among Brahma, Vishnu, Mahesh (Shiva), and Ma Durga arises from the nature of the human mind, which seeks distinctions and hierarchies. However, according to Lord Shiva's teachings and the philosophy found in Shaivism, all these deities represent different aspects of the same ultimate reality (Brahman).In the Shiva Purana, it is said that Brahma is the creator, Vishnu is the preserver, and Mahesh (Shiva) is the destroyer or transformer. They are not rivals but complementary forces. Ma Durga, often seen as the Shakti (divine energy) of Shiva, is inseparable from him. In many scriptures, including the Devi Mahatmyam and Shiva Purana, it is taught that without Shakti, Shiva is powerless (Shava, a corpse), and Shakti herself is formless without Shiva.
Lord Shiva teaches the importance of seeing unity in diversity. The Kena Upanishad and other texts remind us that the ultimate truth is beyond all forms and names. Seeking to compare or rank the deities is a play of the mind (Maya). True wisdom lies in understanding their oneness and meditating on the formless, undivided reality.
Therefore, instead of worrying about who is greater, Lord Shiva's teachings encourage us to seek the divine in all forms, develop devotion (bhakti), and cultivate the wisdom to see the unity behind all apparent differences.
