Ayyappa, also known as Lord Ayyappa or Manikanta, is regarded as the son of Lord Shiva and Mohini (a female form of Lord Vishnu) in Hindu tradition. The story of Ayyappa’s birth is prominent in the South Indian spiritual tradition, especially in Kerala.According to legend, the demon Mahishi could only be defeated by a child born of both Shiva and Vishnu. To fulfill this purpose, Lord Vishnu assumed the enchantress form Mohini, and from the union of Shiva and Mohini, Lord Ayyappa was born. He is revered as a symbol of dharma, celibacy, and self-discipline.
Ayyappa is especially worshipped at the Sabarimala temple, where millions of devotees undertake a pilgrimage each year following strict vows and austerities, which are in line with the ideals of discipline and renunciation associated with Lord Shiva.
