The Legend

The legend associated with Mallikaarjun Jyotirlinga revolves around Lord Shiva and his family. According to the story, Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati's sons, Ganesha and Kartikeya, had a disagreement about who should marry first. To resolve the conflict, they proposed a race around the world, with the winner getting married first. Kartikeya, confident in his abilities, set off on his peacock. Ganesha, on the other hand, circled his parents, symbolizing that they were his world, and thus claimed victory.

When Kartikeya returned and found out about Ganesha's trick, he was upset and decided to leave Kailash. He traveled to the Kraunch Mountain and settled there. To console their son, Shiva and Parvati took residence on the mountain as well. This place came to be known as Srisailam, and the Mallikaarjun Jyotirlinga was established here, representing their eternal presence.
