The Churning of the Ocean.

In ancient times, the Devas (gods) and Asuras (demons) were in constant conflict over supremacy. The Devas, weakened and losing power, approached Lord Vishnu for help. He suggested churning the ocean of milk (Ksheer Sagar) to obtain Amrita, the nectar of immortality, which would restore their strength. However, the churning required the combined efforts of both Devas and Asuras.

The Churning Process :

To churn the ocean, the Devas and Asuras used Mount Mandara as the churning rod and the serpent king Vasuki as the churning rope. Lord Vishnu himself incarnated as Kurma, the giant tortoise, to support the mountain on his back. As the churning commenced, numerous divine and miraculous objects emerged from the ocean.

The Emergence of Halahala :

During the churning, a dangerous and potent poison known as Halahala surfaced from the depths of the ocean. This poison was so toxic that it threatened to annihilate all living beings in the universe, including the Devas and Asuras.

The Intervention of Lord Shiva :

The Plea to Lord Shiva

Terrified by the deadly poison, the Devas and Asuras sought refuge in Lord Shiva, the great ascetic and protector of the cosmos. They implored him to save the universe from the catastrophic effects of Halahala.

Shiva's Sacrifice :

Moved by their pleas and realizing the gravity of the situation, Lord Shiva decided to consume the poison. He took the Halahala in his hand and drank it, holding it in his throat to prevent it from spreading through his body. This act caused his throat to turn blue, earning him the name Neelkanth (the Blue-Throated One).

The Aftermath :

Parvati's Intervention

As Lord Shiva drank the poison, his consort, Goddess Parvati, was alarmed by the potential harm it could cause him. She immediately placed her hand on his throat, ensuring that the poison remained confined there and did not harm him. Her quick thinking and devotion thus protected Lord Shiva from the effects of the deadly Halahala.

Restoration of Harmony

With the threat of the poison neutralized, the churning continued, and eventually, the Amrita was obtained. The Devas, with the help of Lord Vishnu, managed to consume the nectar and regained their strength and immortality, restoring balance and harmony in the universe.
