The Glorious Hymn of Lord Shankar Pashupati Ashtakam

 | पशुपति अष्टकम् |

पशुपतीन्दुपतिं धरणीपतिं भुजगलोकपतिं च सतीपतिम् । प्रणतभक्तजनार्तिहरं परं भजत रे मनुजा गिरिजापतिम् ॥१॥

न जनको जननी न च सोदरो न तनयो न च भूरिबलं कुलम् । अवति कोऽपि न कालवशं गतं भजत रे मनुजा गिरिजापतिम् ॥२॥

मुरजडिण्डिमवाद्यविलक्षणं मधुरपञ्चमनादविशारदम् । प्रमथभूतगणैरपि सेवितं भजत रे मनुजा गिरिजापतिम्  ॥३॥

शरणदं सुखदं शरणान्वितं शिव शिवेति शिवेति नतं नृणाम् । अभयदं करुणावरुणालयं भजत रे मनुजा गिरिजापतिम्  ॥४॥

नरशिरोरचितं मणिकुण्डलं भुजगहारमुदं वृषभध्वजम् । चितिरजोधवलीकृतविग्रहं भजत रे  मनुजा गिरिजापतिम्  ॥५॥

मखविनाशकरं शशिशेखरं सततमध्वरभाजिफलप्रदम् । प्रळयदग्धसुरासुरमानवं भजत रे मनुजा गिरिजापतिम्  ॥६॥

मदमपास्य चिरं हृदि संस्थितं मरणजन्मजरामयपीडितम् । जगदुदीक्ष्य समीपभयाकुलं भजत रे मनुजा गिरिजापतिम्  ॥७॥

हरिविरञ्चिसुराधिपपूजितं यमजनेशधनेशनमस्कॄतम् । त्रिनयनं भुवनत्रितयाधिपं भजत रे मनुजा गिरिजापतिम्  ॥८॥

पशुपतेरिदमष्टकमद्भुतं विरचितं पृथिवीपतिसूरिणा । पठति संश‍ृणुते मनुजः सदा शिवपुरीं वसते लभते मुदम् ॥९॥

English Meaning

Worship the Lord of all beings, the Lord of the moon, the Lord of the earth, the Lord of the serpent world, and the Lord of Sati (Parvati). He is the supreme remover of the distress of his devoted followers. O people, worship the consort of Girija (Parvati).

Neither father nor mother, neither brother nor son, nor great strength or lineage can protect anyone subjected to the influence of time. O people, worship the consort of Girija.

He who is distinguished by the sounds of drums and dindimas (kettledrums), who is skilled in the sweet music of the five notes, who is served by goblins and spirits. O people, worship the consort of Girija.

He who bestows refuge and happiness, who is sought for refuge, who is constantly hailed as "Shiva, Shiva" by people. He who grants fearlessness and is the abode of mercy and kindness. O people, worship the consort of Girija.

He who wears earrings made of human skulls, who wears a snake as a garland, whose banner bears a bull. He whose body is smeared with ashes from the funeral pyre. O people, worship the consort of Girija.

He who destroyed the sacrifice (yajna) of Daksha, who wears the moon on his head, who always grants the fruits of sacrifices. He who burned gods, demons, and humans during the great dissolution. O people, worship the consort of Girija.

Abandoning pride, and realizing the long-standing pain in the heart from birth, death, old age, and disease. Seeing the world nearby, terrified and restless. O people, worship the consort of Girija.

He who is worshipped by Vishnu, Brahma, and the lord of gods, who is saluted by Yama, Kubera, and Indra. He who has three eyes and is the lord of the three worlds. O people, worship the consort of Girija.

This wonderful Ashtakam on Lord Pashupati, composed by the learned king of the earth. Whoever recites or listens to it always resides in the abode of Shiva and attains bliss.
